SCORE Network Sports Analytics Education Workshop

What: Workshop to develop best practices in sports analytics education

When: January 29 & 30, 2027

Where: Charlotte, NC on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Who: Invited Experts in sports analytics, statistics and data science education

This SCORE Network workshop will generate guidelines/best practices for educational training in sports analytics and for building robust pipelines between academia and industry. The workshop will engage leading experts from industry and academia to draft national guidelines around sports analytics in higher education. The in-person event, from Friday midday to Saturday midday, will be held in Charlotte, NC on the campus of UNC Charlotte. With the rapid growth of this dynamic field and with new academic programs being developed, this is an auspicious time for this workshop.

Opening:

11:30a: Motivation, Framing of the Day, Goals, etc

Noon : SCORE Project Update: Nick, Ivan, Rochelle
(interactive, not having talks for 90 min) Modules lessons learned best practices, Assessment of building the network (Rochelle, Nick) Data sets, repos Include some exploration of site/repo Discussion of what else needs to be in module repository

12:30p - Working Lunch

1:00p Background on Sports Analytics for Education - what’s going on in sports analytics education (large national initiative/projects):

Overview Short talks by leading educators with three slides each What does your academic program look like? What does your extracurriculars look like? What is unique about your program? Panel on best practices, what is working, what is not

3:00p SCORE Network Industry panel Bachelor’s vs master’s - how do you decide? Why? Sports expertise vs technical expertise AI Technical classes vs project/communication classes What is academia doing wrong? Nothing, we’re perfect

3:45p Coffee Break

4:15p - Frame next exercise; put people in groups/tables

4:30p Group assigned Table discussion on what does a good major/program look like

5:30p Report out to group and leadership committee

6:30p Dinner

Working dinner: Leadership group is collating, summarizing the notes and framing the next day This includes table/section leaders

Possible evening poster session with students (with wine/beer) about experience
